The Birth of Evelyn Ruth at the Birth Center of Bloomington Normal
Bailey and Alex knew they wanted the birth of their last baby to be captured through the lens of a photographic storyteller. When we first met to discuss their wishes for birth photography, Bailey expressed how much she wanted to trust the process of birth and be fully present for this baby’s entrance into the world.
As she neared 42 weeks, we had many text conversations about how hard the anticipation of and waiting for labor to begin could be at the end of pregnancy. I reassured her that her body knew exactly what to do and that the extra days of baby being cozy in her belly were a gift of time. She continued to remain optimistic despite the extended time of pregnancy that none of us expected for her 5th baby.
Finally, after a few weeks of Braxton Hicks contractions, I received an early morning text from Bailey: “I think today might be the day …” Being an experienced mom, she knew that rest and nourishment were the best next steps. A shower and several intense contractions later, she let me know she was headed to The Birth Center of Bloomington Normal.
As Bailey labored, I witnessed such peace and joy in her spirit as she invited each contraction into her body. We lightly conversed and laughed as labor continued, pausing as she said “I feel another one coming on” and watching Bailey remain relaxed and focused through every surge.
Being so in tune with her body, Bailey knew it was time for the tub as transition approached. Even then, she smiled in between each wave, embracing the entirity of her labor experience.
Alex could be seen throughout Bailey’s laobr anticipating her every need. He set up her essential oils diffuser, brought her water, used acupressure during contractions, and held her hands as the stages of labor progressed. He was incredibly attentive to Bailey’s needs.
At 1:18 pm on November 10, 2023, Evelyn Ruth made her way into her mother’s arms. Bailey’s face beamed with elation - she laughed and cried as she held her baby to her chest.
Not yet knowing if Ruth was a boy or a girl, Alex and Bailey cheered with delight as she held their daughter off her chest to reveal her gender. Alex then planted a kiss of congratulations and pride on his wife’s head as tears streamed down her cheeks. This moment was long awaited and finally here.
Watching Bailey welcome every contraction with ease and radiancy was incredibly sacred. What an honor to bear witness to such a joy-filled labor and birth.
